At Heritage Farms Tasmania, we take great pride in raising cattle that represent the very best qualities of the Belted Galloway breed. But, to be completely honest, a fair bit of our early breeding success began with good old-fashioned luck.
Rod grew up on a farm, but his family mainly raised sheep and a few poddy calves, selling any extras through the local saleyards. Our experience with cattle bloodlines was limited.
So when it came time to choose our animals, Rod started researching cattle breeds suited to rugged terrain, as we were farming on my parent’s property to begin with, and it wasn’t great land.
He discovered that Belties were exceptional natural foragers, calm and good-natured, and particularly capable of grazing scrubby country. Being naturally polled—born without horns—was another major advantage.
Beyond that, we didn’t yet know much about bloodlines or structured breeding programs.
A Twist of Fate
We began with a small commercial herd of Belted Galloway cows and were preparing to purchase a commercial bull when fate had other plans.
We found a promising young bull and went to collect him. Tragically, during loading, he broke through a fence, returned to the herd and was fatally injured by his sire.
It was a devastating loss—and a hard lesson in the importance of good infrastructure and calm cattle handling.
With our plans upended, we began searching further afield and eventually found ourselves at Marananga Stud in Evandale, run by experienced Belted Galloway breeder Rod Summers. He generously gave us a crash course in Beltie breeding while showing us around his property.
Before long, we had agreed to purchase a young bull from his registered herd. Rod mentioned that the bull’s bloodlines traced back to Scotland. While that sounded impressive, we didn’t yet understand the full significance of what he was telling us.
It wasn’t until much later that we realised just what an opportunity we had been given.
Our bull, Hercules, didn’t simply have Scottish heritage. His lineage traced directly back to the Mochrum Estate Herd—one of the four original foundation herds of Belted Galloways in Scotland.
A Heritage That Shaped the Breed
The Mochrum Estate, set on the rugged coast of southwest Scotland, has played an important role in shaping the modern Belted Galloway.
Established in the early 20th century, the herd was carefully managed to preserve the qualities for which the breed is still known today: its distinctive white belt, strong maternal instincts, sound temperament and ability to thrive in difficult conditions.
Mochrum bloodlines have since influenced Belted Galloway herds around the world, including here in Australia.
Excellence That Runs in the Blood
Our stud bull, Hercules, carries that lineage forward. Descended from those original Scottish bloodlines, he combines strength, fertility and frame with the even temperament and structural soundness that make Belted Galloways so dependable.

Since we bought him, Hercules has sired more than 70 calves, displaying remarkable consistency across his progeny. His calves show excellent muscling, good depth of body and the classic, well-defined belt that makes the breed so recognisable.
Of course, a pretty belt is not enough on its own. Those physical traits must be accompanied by sound structure, good temperament and the ability to perform well in the paddock.
We have since strengthened our breeding program with a selection of quality dams from Marananga bloodlines, many of which also carry Mochrum genetics. This has deepened the genetic integrity of our herd and helped ensure that the valuable qualities of these original Scottish lines continue here in Tasmania.
Why Bloodlines Matter
In stud breeding, heritage isn’t simply about having an impressive name somewhere in a pedigree.
Good bloodlines give breeders greater confidence in the traits animals are likely to pass on, including fertility, temperament, structure and adaptability. They provide a genetic foundation on which each new generation can be carefully built.
By maintaining a direct connection to the original Scottish herds, we are not only preserving an important part of the Belted Galloway’s history. We are helping protect the qualities that make these cattle such a distinctive and valuable breed.
Continuing the Legacy
Every calf sired by Hercules is a living link to more than a century of careful selection and breeding.
We are proud to continue that lineage here at Heritage Farms Tasmania—and to play our small part in preserving the strength, character and unmistakable beauty of the Belted Galloway for future generations.
